This is the most real, honest, emotional, and impactful record this band has ever made. This actually turns out to be the best written album in the band’s career, and that’s saying something. This album, more than ever, seems like Jesse is reflecting on his personal life, his music career, mental health, and other stray topics. Lyrically: Ever since their debut, Brand New’s lyrics have just gotten darker and more reflective. His production really makes this album feel like you’re sound some soul searching and thinking about your life. On this album in particular, he helps the band pull off the spacey and more atmospheric vibe they have in mind by perfectly mixing all the elements of the music together and adding in some very unsettling audio cues like people talking in what seems to be therapy sessions and women screaming. He has watched them grow and develop, and he understands what the band tries to do on every record.
Mike has followed Brand New throughout their entire career. Production: The production on this album was done by Mike Sapone. So what makes this album so special? Well let’s take a look. Both albums make you realize that this band you’ve been listening to for so long is even more capable than you thought. Maybe comparing this album to Radiohead’s Kid A is a bit much, but I can’t help but see similarities in the to. The band left us with their version of Kid A, Science Fiction. On the music side though, Brand New left us with one of the greatest goodbyes in the history of this business. I’m not gonna go into that mess because I’m sure most of us are aware of it, but the fact remains, Jesse’s response to this was really the last we ever heard from Brand New.
